The New England Quilt Museum opened in 1987, and holds a permanent collection of more than 150 traditional and contemporary quilts, as well as a library of more than 18,000 quilting related books, archives, and other materials. Objects of particular interest include the commissioned works of master quilter Ruth McDowell, including an innovative two-sided, three-dimensional quilt. The museum occupies an ornate, classic Greek Revival-style building in the downtown area, a few blocks east of North Commons.
